Seems to me like too many ask "What is it worth?" on this site, but now I have the situation.

I haven"t yet taken any pictures, but might be able to figure out how to post here.

Friend of mine bought a IH 460 about 6 months ago. He knows nothing about IH, quit farming 25 yrs ago and now has small acreage.

The 460 was purhased from an elderly farmer, who kept it in his machine shed. The 460 has a wide front (Schwartz I think, very good front tires, rears about 60-70% with no weather cracking, 2-point, engine runs very smooth even under load, tinwork has no dents, really good...just lots of old dust from storage. Some surface rusting on the left engine hood. Fluid in tires; owner bought new rear rim and is on tractor; very little rusting on other rim. Seat is in like new condition; hard to believe...no tears or cracking. Owner is thinking of buying a more recent model tractor; maybe a utility.

Also has loader for it, I think it was repainted as I can"t find any logo on it. It"s red.

The more I walk around it, the better that tractor looks to me. I don"t want it, at 75 yrs of age I am only interested in Farmalls of the "40s and "50s.
This thing is too hi-tech for me!

So...what"s a ball park figure for this thing?
Location central Wisconsin.

Gas with good loader and not using oil 3500
Diesel with low hours and good loader 4500 (both assume a field ready tractor. Jim

Good grief!!! Why are you calling a 460 "high tech."??? It is nothing more than a fancy SMTA that has fast hitch and as I recall they started building 460/560/660 models in '58 0r '59 so it is in your time frame. Buy it. use it, and enjoy!!! Armand

Andrew Z,

I think the name on the hood is International. Gas powered.

Armand,
I don"t want it! I really have no interest or room in my shed to own it. When I got out of the Army in 1962 it was like a strange new world of tractors to me (JD with more than 2 cylinders? IH with 6? Unheard of!) I feel that the zenith of real cool style of Farmalls ended with the Super H and SMTA...anything newer than that is just a bunch of iron and sheet metal. No power steering, power brakes, hour meters, hydraulic this and that, that"s what I drove....and liked it.
Now before lovers of newer iron get their shorts in a bind, remember that this is just my opinion. What others think is fine with me! As long as it"s part of the Red Power world then all is well.

LOL@LA.... I don't care for the "older look, I like the 4/560 and newer look!

Go ahead, it will be a good tractor for ya!

mkirsch,
Something must be missing in my first post. I called the man "my friend" and also stated "I don"t want it". Why is this so hard to understand? My friend is trying to figure out the tractor"s worth so he can sell it and get a newer utility style tractor...and I am merely trying to help him as he does not have a computer and knows nothing about tractor values.
The man is my FRIEND. I don"t believe in treating friends by offering a low ball price to him and then buying it for me to make a buck on it. Friendship is worth more to me than a few lousy bucks.
And...repeating myself...I don"t want it.
Thanks for your answer anyway.

Janicholson,
Thank you very much for your nice reply. It is a straight "honest" gaser just like I described it. I'll pass your estimate on to my friend. Again, thanks for your help.

If it were a friend (or anybody for that matter) I'd try to find out what HE is expecting. Then I can either advise him if that sounds fair or if he should set his sights a little higher or lower.

Howard,
I merely asked on this site what it might be worth. You do not know either one of us. I do not want to advise him...I only want to report to him what he wanted to know. He doesn"t need my advice, he just needs the value info. Jim N. was most helpful. He gave me the info that I will pass on to my friend. Thank you.

I bought a nice 460 comparable to what you are talking about a few years back at a sale for 1700.But with inflation here I would not take less than 3700 with loader.

ejr,
Thanks much for your info. That is what I need.
Where in IA do you live? I lived my first 36 yrs in Grundy Co.

LA, I did in fact read it and seeing as you missed an important point in selling a tractor was teasing with my prior post.

What you missed was LOCATION. That 460 as you described in my AREA is worth about 2500 with a loader. Most folks here looking for a smaller tractor to work with own lake shore or hunting property. The 460 is too big or if they want a tractor that big want a letter or hundred series for looks. It's too small for the area farmers. They are using 806/26/56/86 tractors as PTO power and yard tractors. I know 3 farmers in the area that would use a 460. So no market.

You should check your local area for that size tractor keeping in mind that the D series AC's are desired by collectors and will be more expensive as will JD. Check Craig's List, local ads and dealers.

oldtanker (how old are you?)

OK, I missed stating location, but my handle says LA in WI....LA (my initials) in Wisconsin, and many a person has picked up on that.

Selling?? I have over 40 yrs in sales and sales management. I wasn"t trying to sell, just getting a value.

As for you mentioning AC and JD, let me put it this way: I have a T-shirt which reads "Drive a Farmall. Life is too short to drive an ugly tractor". Nuf said.

Craig"s list??? I"m hoping you are again kidding here.

I do appreciate your responding to me...and I thank you for your input. We need people like you on here.
