Farmall B serial #

I"ve acquired a B without a serial number plate alongside the seat. On the engine (front right) there"s a small panel with FAB etched in. I think it"s a replacement block - right? Also, where"s the best place to look for a casting code on a B. I"ve never found one anywhere on my early A.

FAB IS the serial number prefix. Clean off some more dirt and grime and look for the numbers.

Casting codes are on virtually every part of your tractor that is made of cast iron. Engine block, cylinder head, trans/rear end housing, etc. The codes are a part of the casting and are not stamped in or etched into a plate of any kind.

Early A`s didn`t have very many date codes on them. It would be the letter "I" for 1939. I know I found one date code with an "I" on my `39 A (serial 1474), but don`t remember where I saw it. I`ll have to go out and take a look again. Also, if the engine IS original, correct me if I`m wrong, I believe the serial #`s for the tractor and engine matched on the A`s & B`s up to 1947 ??

The serial numbers should be the same. On my A the engine place is totally blank, indicating a replacement, I guess. On the B, the FAB is smack in the center of the smoothly polished "serial number place".

Found it! My B is M213239G Which, I guess makes it a 1947 model. One of my books should decode the M and the G. Thanks for the help.

I don't know that the G is, but FABM is the prefix for the engine serial, FAB is the prefix for the chassis serial. The stamper may not have got the spacing right. The numbers match except for the ones made in Louisville.
