I finally got my old M freed up. I had to take head and oil pan off. The middle two cylinders were seized. After a honing job they llok great.
I was planning to reuse the head gasket. Can i brush paint the gasket with aluminum paint or should i get a spray can?How many coats should i apply? Do both sides? Thanks Kent

The head gasket cost less new than the time it will take for all the people on here to tell you to buy a new one and use spray on copper coat both sides one even coating. (((that is if there were consultation charges.))) The used gasket cannot crush to conform with the micro changes in the positioning of the head. The time it takes to replace the used gasket with a new one when it leaks (and you are unsure if it is that, or a cracked bore behind the sleeve), is not worth the cost of the new gasket. Jim

Jim and Al are right, get a new head gasket, copper coat spray both sides (1 coat), torque the head to 110 lbs, adjust the valves to .17, warm it up for a little while then re-torque the head immediatly and another valve adjustment...

well you done half a job on the engine , sounds like only honeing cyl's. so your time is free and i would reuse that gskt. but inspect it first.and if you spray it with permatex high-tac spray i am sure you will be fine. i have done this on a couple that i wanted to see how the rest of tractor was. my intention was to pull it down again but its still running and no head gakt leaks...suprise. ooh and this was on a 340 ih utility with a diesel , another suprise. this was just my own experiment cause i had no idea how the trans or diff was . but ya its a good little tractor so i will restore it one of these days.

I've read about a lot of oddball techniques but I've never heard of this aluminum paint thing. Where did you get that idea?

No longer a pro mechanic but I would never....ever reuse a head gasket!!!!! Head gaskets have a designed in crush fit that fits components ONE TIME ONLY!!!!! Painting them is a band aid that will fail in short time (paint burns) umless all you have is a trailer queen.

Rick

I can't remember, but i've done it on lots of kohler engines in Cub Cadets. never had a problem. Kent

If the gasket is intact I would reuse it. Simply add some High Temp permatex to it. Also torque it down about 5 psi over spec. Probably the biggest issue I would have would be the rings on 2 and 3. I would check to make sure they are flexing as they should be. Maybe you have done this already though.

Ive been a case IH mechanic for 25 years and I dont care if its a cummins or an IH engine We allways brush paint the head and the top of the block with aluminum paint and in those 25 years I have never seen a head gasket come back, not even on the turbo charged 560 diesels.A valve grind gasket set for your tractor isnt that expensive. I wouldent chance it.
