300 u with 2001 loader can't lower bucket under control

I have a 300 u with a 2001 loader. It has a trip bucket , and double acting cylinders. I am puzzled by the way the valves work.

When I have a load on it that I am trying to lower slowly, and the load is not yet being lowered at all - as I am trying to do it slowly - the engine is loaded. What causes that?

The it will sort of take control away from me and just drop the load much faster than I would like.

What causes the engine to be under load from moving the valve lever ... even when the load on the loader is not being moved... and then dropping it too fast.

You should be able to lower as slow as you want
and the engine may well be laboring. If you move
lever far enough so it quits laboring you are
opening the spool valve quite a bit. Some valves
have feathering slots in them for better control
and yours may not have them. The laboring is
caused by the regulator port being opened before
the return port is opened and if you do not need
down pressure you can turn the spool on the valve
to single action for lowering. The cover on valve
is marked S and D with a roll pin to control max
movement either way. You may possibly have a check valve,( seperate block mounted on aux valve) but I doubt it . That could give you problem with feathering drop. I have taken the balls out of a lot of them on loader tractors for convenience.

I think from reading this that you know exactly what you are talking about. I like the S / D idea. Seems to me I knew that existed, but forgot it or didn't think of it to solve this problem. I think that would do it. thanks a lot.
