2 Farmall H Questions

Hello,

I have a couple questions about my H. It is a 1946 model and I use her to maintain about 3 acres. It has the old style pipe style seat with a spring mounted to the pipe between your feet as you ride. This spring is totally worn out so I have no suspension as I ride. I noticed these are 50 dollars to purchase which is possible but pricey. I also noticed the design style changed on the models following mine. Is this a flawed design? Will replacing the spring fix this issue? I am a big guy 6 2" 280. Will this spring support me? Since this tractor is a worker could I possible use a suspension spring off a motorcycle part or something else? Does anyone have the specs for this spring so I might buy a less expensive one somewhere local?

My second question has to do with the temperature guage. I have a guage off a cub and the bushing is much smaller than my H. I want to use it as a replacement on my h but in order to do that I will have to dissasemble my non working guage to get the bushing I need off. Is it possible to dissasemble and reassemble the temperature gauge?

Thanks for the help!

I'm only a little lighter than you and I'm sure a good spring would take care of the problem. There were a lot of aftermarket seats back in the day, so finding one on an H that's being parted out shouldn't be hard. Most guys will want to take it back original, so don't throw away your original seat. You can't dis-assemble a temp gauge, so your only option would be to find a correct bushing to make the cub gauge fit. Or buy a correct gauge for your H.

Look for a spring on eBay or scrap yard. Cut the top full turn off
and put that spring inside your existing spring. Try it out and you
may have to cut some more off till it feels right to you.

I have a bad case of dunlaps disease and I have my tractors
outfitted like that.

Unless your original spring is broken most likely replacing it will make no difference. On the original seats the pivot bolt and the holes get worn so that the pipe touches on the platform so the spring is not able to provide any suspension. There have been cases where the seat support has been worn so much that it has broken off the tractor.

I have seen at least three different adapter bushings used with temperature gauges When you get a new gauge it should come with the correct bushing to adapt it to the head.

The other style seat you see is called a "Monroe" seat I believe.

It was an aftermarket seat that was often used to replace the OEM "pipe" seat that you have now, for the exact reason you think: Pipe seats suck.

This one is still in the photo ads. That is a fair price and you will find the ride a lot more comfortable. Both the spring and shock absorber might have to be replaced which can still be bought from several places.

The bushing(s) you need for your temp gauge are available in any hardware store. If you're not sure of the size you need, just take both the old and new gauge with you to the store and figure out what you need.
