McCormick starter removal

Has any one had a problem removing the starter from an IH W-4? I think a Farmall H is about the same. My problem is that the back end of the starter motor bumps into the transmission housing before the starter can be turned enough to pull it out of the flywheel housing.

Thank you Harold H, that is what i was afraid that i would need to do, but thats not too bad. after making this post i saw a picture of a Farmal H and i can see the starter araingment is not the same. thanks again, paul in oregon

Done it more than once! Take as many of the bolts out of the clutch cover as you can, loosen the one under the starter, and any others you cant get all the way out. With the bolts out of the starter, lift up with a small prybar on the starter side of the cover as far as you can. Starter will come out without having to buy a belt pulley gasket. (Or making one)
