super m vs new holland 489

Has any one pulled a mower conditioner with their super m before. I know sounds like a dumb question but I am just looking for a little feed back. I have a new holland 489 mower conditioner it cuts a 9 foot swath and has crimping rollers. I would like to pull it in 2 or 3 gear. I also run over a lot of hilly ground and didn't know if it would have the power to do it.

SM is geared faster than an M, so it would do well in 1st doing heavy mowing. The selling feature of the SM was that it was geared faster and with the added HP, you could do more work quicker. I have mowed, grill high timothy, running wide open. Here in Pa ground hog holes are a problem on hilly ground. The mounds can flip you over. Also I have worked some very hilly ground with the old narrow front end Farmalls and had no trouble. Keep your foot on the upper side wheel brake to keep it from losing traction and spinning.

I used to cut hay with a stright M and a 469 new holland and never had any problem. This was 25 years ago and I know that the seed today produces a heavier crop then back then. I would try it and then you will know.

When we were still dairy farming,we often used a 135 MF to run a 489.The only real issue with that was slow hydraulic capacity. It had the power[38hp]to pull the machine

I pulled an Itnernational 990 with a '41 JD A with the original low compression pistons, about 29 h.p. Am M should do fine.

I have zero experience with a Super M (although I would like to own one as well as a Super H) or your particular model of NH haybine.

That said I pull a Hesston 1120 (9' sickle mower with conditioner rollers) with an old 1950 John Deere A which has quite a bit less hp than your Super M. I hope to try a plain old Farmall h on the moco this year just for giggles.

I think your Super will do fine in 2nd gear (3.8 mph) in heavy yielding hay and probably be able to use 3rd gear (5.0 mph) some in more normal yielding hay. I highly doubt that you ever will have to use 1st gear (2.6 mph) with the hp you have available.

Couple I went to school with have horses and do thier own hay with a 489 behind a M. I think he runs in 1st/2nd but it gets the job done.

The 489 isn't a high-speed mowing machine, so you may be limited more by the mower's capacity than by the HP of the tractor.

If you've got the tractor, and the haybine, and the field, it will cost you nothing to give it a try.
