Got my couple of rows of potatoes planted today. The planter is a 1 row IH planter. Been using it for years and it does a great job. The A is the one I've been posting occasionally here asking questions - its my first job for it. Worked great on the planter.

I have two McCormick one row potato planters and neither one looks like that. I think mine are from the thirties. Do you know how old yours is?

I'm still holding off planting potatoes. We had a early warm spring so I'm hoping the the potato bugs are out early and staving to death.

well, using an old measure, when the buds turn from silver tip to "burst" on the maple trees, it is time to plant potatoes. Date has nothing to do with it..... :wink:

I am glad I am not trying to make a living growing potatoes! I planted mine in early February (Georgia) and they are still popping up. The sugar snaps planted at the same time are two feet tall and March corn is up about a foot. I assume it has to do with using grocery store spuds for seed which were cheaper than the "Seed Potatoes" at the local seed store. It has worked in the past but failed this year. Grocery store potatoes are treated with a growth retardant like MH-30 to retard the growth of eyes. In the past I held on to some until the eyes were large and that worked. The ones I used this year did not have visible eyes and I am afraid the growth retardant got me.

Best time to plant taters is when you get ready to plant taters not when old says it is time to plant taters !! Good lookin outfit .

Running a little behind aren't you?? March 17th is the day you should plant potatoes LOL. I have them up about a foot now and need to add more straw to them

I'm just west of Rochester NY and normally this is about the time you can get onto a field or garden around my area. Last day for a frost around here is early May. Just spent the last 2 nights in the 20's.

Last day in a normal years where I live for frost is in a few days as in around the first of May but I still put my potatoes in on St Pats day if I can. Potatoes can take a few hard freezes and still do just great. Even when I was up in CT. I would plant them if I could on St. Pats day

Old timers ( of which I am rapidly becoming a memeber of ) always told me to put em in on Good Friday, so thats what I do and it works out fine .

I always thought that was a dumb plan. Good Friday could be anywhere from March 20th to April 23rd.

Most years good Friday and St. pats day are very close to being the same time as in a week or so.
