SC brake pedal shaft slot

Can any one give a reason for the "slot" in the splined axle (brake pedal shaft) ? The brake housing has a removable cap or plug, which would give access to the slot in the shaft. But, what was the purpose of the access to that slot? I can see no purpose for it, but IH wouldn't have spent the money to slot that shaft without there being a need for some process or adjustment.

It`s for a fertilizer side dresser drive gear for front mount planters and cultivators. It has a mechanism to engage and disengage. When you lifted the planter, the rod would push back and disengage the drive gear, when lowered, it would engage.

I think your talking about the bull pinion shaft that the disc brake pads slip over under the heavy cast disc brake housing?

IF that's the case they are for attaching planter/fertilizer drive sprockets. Pics show my Super C with C279 black land planter mounted.

I've never seen one of these types of planters. But, now it makes sense. Dern, those ole IH engineers thought of everything, didn't they?

I actually believe those old IH engineers had more on the ball than the guys designing the crap of today.

I suspect today's engineers are driven by the bean counters to make is cheap and last just long enough for the warranty to expire.

The 2 point fast hitch is far superior to today's 3 point hitch. Just one example.

A planter that takes all day to attach to the tractor doesn't seem very "on the ball" to me. Everything IH came up with back in those days was overly complicated, over-engineered.

Tell me, what advantage did this Rube Goldberg contraption offer over a trailer planter, or a 3pt mounted planter?
