I wired my farmall model a using the wiring diagram.
alternator to amp and amp to starter side thru solnoid also jumper to switch will start fine but does not shut off even when I pull the ground cable.
have been going thru ballast restors also help

My drawing is bad, I know. This is how I did my Farmall 240 I used one Radio Shack switching diode 1N914-1N4148. They come in a 10 pack for a couple bucks. Used an indicator lamp assembly 272--0336 for an idiot light. I added the diode to the light since the light is a 100mA LED it only works for indication and does not have enough power draw, so the diode was needed as well. I left the ammeter in place, but if I have the dash apart again, I would switch to a volt meter. That would be more useful. Hope this information is useful.

What alternator did you use?? If it is a Delco 10si then you need a diode or resister or light bulb in the wire from the #1 terminal on the 2 wire plug. By the way NEVER unhook either one of the battery cables with the engine running because you can/will fry the alternator and can even kill your self if you touch the wrong thing at the right time

You need one of these red plugs that have a resistor and diode build in. This plug sure makes adding a Delco 10SI simple. My e-mail is open. charlie

There is not normally a solenoid on an A. (though someone may have converted it to Key start)
The starter switch is where the battery cable attaches from The positive side of the battery.
The negative is ground.
These diagrams will make it right. The alternator diagram shows the diode. Jim

I wired it like pic # 5 but when I touch the neg
post the starter srarts turning what stops the voltage when the pos and neg are hooked up the warning light ?? thanks merle

I have a inline bulb? still don;t see how it works
without a solnoid when you have the pos to starter
and neg to ground I have to be missing something

How do you start the traceot, Key switch with OFF, Run,Start, OR a Push Pull button and a pull rod to make it start.
If a key switch is used, the little round cylinder thing (often incorrectly called a solenoid)is a starter relay. There should be three or four terminals on it. One small one is labeled S the other small one is labeled I.
The S termional is closest to the big terminal that should connect to the battery Plus with a big fat wire.
This S terminal is connected to the ignition key or starter button, and nothing else.
The I terminal should be connected to the coil side of the ballast resistor, and nothing else.
The other big terminal is connected to the starter motor big terminal.
There should be a #10 wire from the battery connection of the solenoid (+) to the amp gauge. There should be no other connection there.
The other side of the amp gauge should have a wire going to the key, and light switch. And a #10 wire going to the alternator big terminal.
The diode is placed near the alternator and one lead goes to the ballast resistor connection to the key, the other goes to the L terminal on the alternator (with the white band toward the alt.
I hope this helps. If you have a rod pull starter, we need to know> Jim
