Farmall m vs. farmall h

I grew up with a farmall m and would like to buy another farmall sometime soon. It would mostly be a pleasure tractor just for riding, occasional plowing and using a bucket to move some dirt piles. so the question is what would be better for what i need a farmall M or an H? thanks

Well, it depends on how much power you want. I grew up with a Farmall M and an AW-7 Diesel. Last year I bought a Farmall H. It is a good tractor and has sufficient power for its size. For me it feels very small after the Farmall M and AW-7. Some people find the H more manœuvreable than the M. If you want a light tractor, which is easy to drive anywhere then the H is probably what you want. If you want more horse power, then you want an M. My grandfather started with an F12, then an H, then an M and then an AW-7 Diesel. He bought each one, because he found that the previous tractor, while perfectly serviceable and reliable was not quite powerful enough for the farm work he was doing.

All things equal the H will use less fuel, steer more easy than a M unless power steering is involved and be fine for joy ridding or occasional plowing with matching plow.
For using a loader the M would be better and be stronger in the front end (NF) and center section. Also if you want low lugging power the M is better.
If I had to give up My H or M the H would be gone even though I realy like the H now for light stuff with more run time on fuel.

I have had loaders on both H's and M's, both do an okay job. One H with a JD 45 loader did an exceptional job. It had trip bucket , but the whole setup was very user friendly for some reason. Since the bucket capacity is roughly the same on these old loaders, I would rather wrestle with an H than an M. You really don't gain anything with the M on the loader. Also the Arm strong steering system can be a real bear. My $.02 worth.

I have both tractors with trip buckets on both. The H is handier and gets used alot more. For moving large snow piles, manure or dirt though, the M is way better, it will push long after the H has spun out.Not even close !! Hydralics are basically the same as far as what they will lift in my experiences.

I have 2 H's and a M and over all I like driving my H a little better then the M One of my H's is a 1950 and has a IH wide front and fenders and is my favorite tractor to drive and plow with. I am going to add power steering to it so im sure i'll like it even more then

With Gas Prices you better go with an H. The old guy that overhauled a lot of M Farmalls in our area who is no longer alive said that if you want to burn up 5 gallons of gas in a hurry overhaul an M and let it idle for a short while.
