Finally an update, M not charging

The M is charging again due to luck I guess. First I grounded the generator as explained by John. Nothing. Then I checked the ground on the voltage regulator. Nothing. Next I tried to re-polarize the generator. Nothing. I decided that I had nothing to lose at this point so I took the cover off the voltage regulator and pushed in one of the contacts. It smoked a little. The tractor charged the rest of the day, I shut it off and started it 3 or 4 times to be sure. Am I extremely intellegent or just lucky? What did I do to fix it? Thanks, Ellis

A non conductive piece of trash was between the contacts. When pushed on they made contact and fried the trash. Were it mine, the next time I would clean the contacts with a fine 400 grit paper, then clean with a folded dollar bill. Jim

Like Jim says it was probably a bit of grease or other debris on the cutout contacts. Pushing the relay in by hand caused it to make contact and heat/burn off the debris, hence the brief smoke.

Tip: Verify the ammeter returns to center position after shutdown. Should the relay contacts fail to open (and this happens!) it will cause the ammeter to show a strong discharge. This will quickly drain the battery, and may also overheat/ruin the generator.
