shifter problems

backed tractor out of shop and shifted to third and tractor seems to be stuck in 2 gears. Moved shifter to neutral and it goes forward but can't get if out of gear. New problem to me.

I assume by your handle it is a Super H? Pop the big pin in the shifter base out (goes through the casting) and pull shifter up out of way. Use screw driver to alight the shift forks so the slot is even across.. replace shifter... She's stuck in multiple gears.

If you have a good feel you might get lucky and figure out where the rails are without pulling the shifter. If not, it isn't too bad to take it out.

If you pull the shifter and see that the rails are already aligned you may have lost the pilot bearing and be effectively stuck in 5th. This happened to me on my H last summer. The symptoms were that when I put it in any other gear but 5th it acted like it was in two gears and whether I put in 5th or left it in neutral it would act the same, like it was in 5th. For some reason the rollers in the pilot bearing disintegrated and jammed instead of rolling around like they had always done before.

Drove the pin out and pulled shifter lined up plates and replaced shifter but it did the same thing again. Looks like I need to build up the end of the shifter. How do you determine how much.

Take the pin out that holds the shift lever in. You and easily see the shifter rails and tell if more than one of them is in gear. In neutral they should all be lined up. You can use a big screwdriver to get them all lined up so the transmission is in neutral. Get yourself a "slopply shifter fix" off E bay. I used one and it worked great.
Sloppy shifter fix

There is a picture somewhere in this discussion forum, but I can't find it. The end tip of the shifter has to be about 3/4" fore-and-aft, by about 0.30" thick. The distance from the end of the wide end up to the neck hsa to be about 0.43". Maybe someone can post the picture. Get it welded up and ground to these dimensions, isntall the Sloppy Shifter Fix (I did) and it's fixed.

my C does this. It will always do it when i shift fast. if you slow the shift, this may work for you.
when you remove the shift lever to get tranny our of gear, i find that i need to jack up one of the rear wheels to remove pressure.

Here is a picture I stole from an old post.

Thanks for all the information. Will try and get the welding done tomorrow and put it back together. It will probably out last me. My dad bought the tractor new in 1953, first one sold by local dealer.

Even after you weld it, make it a habit to shift in "squares."

Straight ahead/back to get to neutral, straight sideways to the next pair of gears, then straight ahead/back into the next gear.

People tend to shift in a "V" shape, which is how you slip out of the rails and end up in two gears at once. I did that exactly twice. First time Dad was annoyed. Second time, suffice it to say the air was BLUE.
