M oil presure

I just finished rebuilding a Farmall M gas tractor and it runs great but carries almost no oil pressure at an idle When rpm"s are increased it goes up but not as high as it should for a rebuilt engine. When going thru the boxes from the machine shop that did the engine work I found a small brass plug about 3/8 diameter that I never found a home for. There are no visible signs of an oil leak externaly, is there a place internally that this plug should go in. Any help would be appreciated Thank you.

The plug (if threaded) might fit into an oil pressure gallery. If the engine was tanked for cleaning, the prep may have removed plugs. Threr is IIRC a orifice in the supply to the bypass oil filter. The oil pump needs to be checked for flatness at the cover, and a gear end clearance of .0005 to .001". Jim

The block was tanked and cleaned the plug is threaded. Where is the place for the plug in the oil filter base. The oil pump has .008 clearance in the gears.

That is probably the problem then, as Janicholson said, you should have no more than .001" clearance between the end of the gears and the cover.

The orifice for the oil filter is the filter bolt itself. Oil from the pump comes up through the bottom of the bolt, then out the small hole in the side and into the filter.

The gear clearance (backlash) is OK, gear to case at thetooth should be more like .0015 to 2.
The Oil gallery is at the back of the filter housing base, IIRC the orifice is there. There are other gallery plugs inside as well. Good luck. Jim

That plug may have been installed in the oil gallery, but was removed when cleaning the block.
Take the plug to your machine shop and see if they remember removing it. May have been in the
camshaft area of the block. I wouldn't run the engine. Look at the front of and rear of the engine for oil dripping. Hal

I think there was plug behind the timing gear. It would pump a lot of oil into that area. The plug can probably be installed thru one of the holes in the cam gear. I would loosen the bolts holding the timing gear cover and see if a lot of oil runs out. Hal
