Oil Pan Gasket Shrunk

Got an NOS oil pan gasket that's about 1" short in length and half that in width. Is there any way to make it grow up a little? It's probably shot since it's very hard and wrinkled.

Ordered some flat gasket material in 1/16" thickness from O'Reilly to make my own tomorrow if necessary (always in a hurry and don't want to wait until next week to get one made for the tractor).

All comments appreciated.

(quoted from post at 15:18:14 03/09/12) Is it cork or rubber or paper or some other material?

It appears to be paper, maybe some sort of fiber. Doesn't appear to be composed of asbestos. It's not rubber or cork.

It may take some rather hot water to do the job.
Ordinarily just boiling water will work but I
always used to crank up the steam cleaner as that
got super hot. Fact is, I did that to most cork
gaskets. They would often get too large if you
didn't watch it, but in some applications that
was great like valve covers gaskets on the old
M's, H's and the like. I would put them on and as
I gradually tighten the cover I stuff them under
and you have a nice seal even with a warped out of
shape cover. That side cover over the tappets on
the old 4 bangers was another place that worked
good. No sealer, just squish.

Well, I soaked the gasket in luke warm water for a couple hours and sure enough, it grew about an inch in length. I layed it on a flat surface, stacked paper on top, weighed it down, and will see how it fits tomorrow.

Thanks all.

I went to put on the gasket, and it had shrunk again, so in the trash. Got some roll stock big enough to make one myself, and with a little black RTV, put it on. Hopefully it will be OK.
