cleaning brake bands

The trans seals on my A leaked. The PO put a piece of wood in the weep hole to stop the leak (talk about curing the symptom and not the cause). As you can guess the brake band is saturated with oil. If I clean it with brake cleaner would they be good to go? I would assume so but more obvious things have passed me by before :)

I burn them clean. Keep igniting till it won't burn on it's own any more.

also, if you are in no hurry to put it back together, lay the bands out in the sunshine for a few days. the ultra violet rays will break down the oil and grease.

you can get them clean with many of the methods described, brakeclean, heat with torch then take stiff wire brush to remove what cooked out etc but with brakeclean at $3.00 a can I used 4 cans to get the last set I did clean plus your time might want to price a set because they will always still have a little oil still in them your call

I have never tried this but a old tractor man said to put oil soaked clutches and brake bands in baby powder to draw the oil out. HTH

I burned out my Farmall A brake linings like you are doing on the picture. The problem I had is that the linings must lose something when they are oil saturated and burned clean as now they are real touchy when you step on the brakes. Just a little pressure on the pedal and the wheel will lock up. In some ways it is good as they are almost like power brakes, so as long as you are aware of this they are OK. Roger
