Where (all) is my injection pump leaking?

I think it's mostly just the gov. shaft seal. Can that be changed without going into the pump? The first two pictures show the wet place from the shaft down, running along the bottom of the pump, with some dripping onto the frame rail and some running on down the side of the engine block. After a thorough cleaning 8 days ago, then running the engine for an hour or so 6 days ago, then sitting until yesterday, it has done what you see and dripped 4 or 5 drops on the floor. Getting ready for paint, that's enough that I think I want it fixed.

This last picture shows some slightly damp places between one of the covers and the engine block. I don't think this one is bad enough to fix unless it's really, really, easy, or unless someone smarter than me really, really, thinks it should be fixed before paint.

If you are going to fix it you just as well have the pump gone through. Needs disassembled to replace the seal. If its diesel leaking out, more than the seal needs repaired.

As D Slater points out, there is supposed to be
engine oil in the pump (up to the level of the
petcock - visible to the front) if it is higher than
that, and the seal is bad on the shaft, it will leak readily. Transfer pump seals can be replaced. It
is a careful take pictures type task, with real
cleanliness. By the book. Jim

Yeah, what they said. Hold on to your socks when you call for that price!!! I called Central Fuel in IA last week to have them do just what you are talking about. He said it would be $650 just to do seals and he would probably find other problems while he is there. He said most guys are better off to do the $1000 exhange.

Well, not what I wanted to hear, but that's life.

I knew what oil is supposed to be in there, and how much, and I put it there myself. What I didn't know is if that shaft went straight into the reservoir that the petcock goes into. With the knowledge that it does, it's obvious that the previously correct oil level is no longer correct, and the trouble is deeper than an external shaft seal.

I have not seen much in 50 years that I couldn't do. I haven't tried brain surgery, but I'm young!! I think I have another one of these pumps that I can "practice" on, so I guess my questions would be, am I going in to just replace seals? Can I get parts? Are special tools necessary? etc.

Any and all advice is appreciated!!

That is where a lot of the cost comes from. Central Fuel has to get the gaskets custom made because nobody makes them anymore. They will sell them to you for $200 something.
