farmall m charging problems

OK i have a 1950 farmall m 6 volt positive ground that will not charge. Did the motor test on the generator its fine. This tractor has a cutout relay on the generator. This thing will only charge when i ground the generators field to the frame of the tractor. I put a brand new 4 position light switch in with a brand new wire from light switch field resistor to generators field post and still nothing. If i have the field wire hooked up and touch the cutout relay points together all it does is discharge. Im almost ready to just put a grounded wire from the field post on a switch so i can charge it when i need to. Cant quite figure it out.

If it passed BOTH motor tests and if it charges if you dead ground the gennys Field post that tells me the genny is okay

That light switch needs a good clean to frame ground connection you know, you may wanna check that with a meter.

If its a good LHBD switch see if when its in the High Charge position the terminal that connects to the gennys FLD post has a good low resistance to frame ground connection???????

If it charges if you ground the gennys Field but NOT if the gennys field is wired to the light switch, the switch is bad,,,,,,,,,or not wired correct,,,,,,,,or isnt well grounded.

In the low charge position there should be the resistor (3 or so ohms) in series between the terminal that wires to the gennys Field post and ground.

INSURE THE SWITCH IS WIRED RIGHT AND HAS A GOOD GROUND

As you know, the generator F terminal connects to the light switch, which grounds the field through the switch box cover, switch box, steering pedistal, tractor frame, then back to the generator case.

If any one of those half dozen spots where parts screw or bolt together has rust that prevents a good ground between the light switch case and generator case, the gen field will not be grounded and the generator will not charge.

If you run a new ground wire from the light switch body to the generator case, bypassing all those rusty joints, I bet your charging problem will go away permently.

As a test, temporarily connect a wire from the generator case to the light switch case and see if your generator comes to life.

i have a feeling it is not getting a good ground. i put a new switch on from the brillman company and i followed wiring diagrams. I am pretty sure its wired correctly. Everything else i pretty rusty so ill clean it up and see if that helps.

Over the years I have put many ground wires directly from generator to the light switch also to eliminate all those potential poor grounds like you said.

Easy to test, just take a piece of wire from the bat ground to the metal button on the light switch. Jim

I have a "feeling" your "feeling" is correct lol (as noted below) insure the switch has a good ground and then see what happens?????????

the on only m that i have that is six volts the field is grounded so it charges all it can all the time it is running. this works very well.
