I think my SMD engine was white

I think the engine in my Super MD was originally white. That's probably a trivial fact, if it is a fact, but I think it's an interesting trivial fact.

I have thought it's not the original engine for some time, and had seen clues that there was another color underneath the red, but until a few days ago I thought that other color was yellow. Now, after a thorough de-greasing last Thursday, it's clearly white.

Anyone think there's any reason not to go forward with a nice red paint job? Tractor s/n F-35### J, engine s/n D264 4381.

Back in the day IH offered most of the engines used in farm tractors as stand alone power units for irrigation pumps and such. It's possible your engine started its career in something other than a farm tractor. Seen it a lot with IH combines, engine-powered balers and forage harvesters for instance where the engine was removed to re-power a tractor.

The white or yellow is primer. The red paint has faded, wore off or peeled off. The Super MD that I had years ago was the same way with white showing thru the red. My 806 showes some yellow.

Hello,
I'm pretty new to the tractor scene. I have a question please? I can clearly see an injector pump in your first pic, but pic's two and three I see a distributor and plug wires? Are these glow plugs? I'm not familiar with these set-ups yet. but i don't understand. please help lol?
Thanks for your time,
Wayne

Yep,you see both. The early Ih diesels werestarted on
gasoline. Then when they were warm, you switched them
over to diesel. It was a faily complicated .

I have a '53 SM that has white under the red on the gas tank, hood, grill, engine, & frame rails. Under the white is a grayish white that was used for the primer. Rest of the tractor has red under the outer red then a reddish brown primer.

I had an old IH parts man that said that IH painted some tractors that way for the 1st Farm Progress Show that was held in Armstrong, IL. I am 3rd owner of this tractor and it was originally sold at the IH factory dealership in Danville, IL which is near Armstrong. I also have a pic that was sent to me by Ken Updike from Carter & Gruenewald sent me that a gentleman from IA sent him of a SM his dad / granddad owned that was painted similarly, though slightly different.
