More 350 TA Questions

In an earlier post I ask about the TA on the 350 I have just bought. I determined that the TA clutch was bad and the TA was working in low. I decieded to start draing the fluid out of the TA and transmission because it looked very bad. (Water and thick) I pulled the plug at the bottom of the TA and both transmission plugs. The TA has drained for a while and there seems to be still fluid in the rear part. I can turn the TA and the gears at the rear still pick up a lot of brown, water/fluid. There seems to be a tray looking place just under the gears that is still holding fluid. Can someone tell me how to get this fluid out or how this works? I can not see in there very well to tell just how it is made.

Thats a pocket in the housing to hold lubricating oil for the T/A. without the housing removed and tipped on end or over the only way to get it out is suction or soak it up if you can get to it.

Thanks, I thought that might be the answer, but how does the fluid get there and how does it replenish? It seems that if on a hill, you would loose fluid from this.

Main source is a passage for thrown oil to come through the transmission wall into T/A unit. Oil just runs over the casting tub to flow out. Also another place that doesn't drain very good with drain plugs removed is above the T shaped cover on the bottom of the T/A housing.

Over a period of years it is mainly condensation. It can also get in where the shift lever attaches. The only way to prevent most of the condensation is to change the fluid once a year as IH recommended. Almost no one does that, including me.

Ideally, you should use CaseIH HyTran, or at least something marked as compatible.

IIRC, the book specifies SAE30 non-detergent motor oil with an additive, but this concoction was replaced by HyTran in the early 1960s.

You do NOT want to use "Gear Lube" it is too thick and sticky, and the TA will not work properly.
