farmall m low gears

I am looking for a set of gears for a low geared
M. The tractor currently has high gears, and I
want to convert it to a low geared m. do you
know anyone who has some and is it an easy
conversion?

The swapping part is easy. All you have to do is remove the old and install the new. It's finding a set that is the hard part. Folks that have them are not usually too keen to part with them. I would recommend watching eBay, (I saw a set of them on there just a few weeks ago), and beyond that, you might start looking for a junk tractor with a set in it, like a cotton picker model.

i am not sure how much work you are wanting to do but for the last few days i have been tosing around the idia of adding a TA to my 49 M. if all else fails you may be able to take the bell housing off a SMTA MTA or 400 and swap it for the one on your M. I have a 319 new idea picker and i could use a few lower gears myself. If you could wait a few weeks i could mess around in the shop and let you know what i find

I know where a cotton picker m sets it was a 49 or a 48 i don't recall but the trans ran in revers i do belive it is in southern illinois by Vandelia, i could pull the parts a ship them for a price

Fellows,

Cotton picker M will have the high speed gears and uses a reduction in the bull gear to achieve 2.5 mph in low gear for the high drum. I don't think there is any difference in a low drum picker tractor, just runs a little faster ground speed like 2.75 mph.

Put the M out in the fence row and get a SMTA, 400-450. Install 560 gears. If you wanna go nuts, put on 660 planetaries and make sure the TA works.

M low-low first requires new countershaft, new 2nd/3rd contershaaft combo gear, new mainshaft 1st/reverse gear, and new reverse idler combo gear. You can find that kit on the CaseIH parts catalog. You should check that source out to make sure that I am reasonably correct. I am clear that it takes four separate parts to make the changeover. I wouldn't bother. I'd get another, but later, tractor.

Note all those things make it faster than an M. ;)

There has been an M with low gears for sale on Craigslist for a while. Last posting said if he could not get it sold, he would part it out. I believe it was in Henderson, MN

(quoted from post at 18:08:55 02/23/12) sflem,

I beg your pardon. Everything that I mentioned will drastically reduce the speed of a SMTA, 400-450. See link for tooth counts.

Your smarter than me. I thought SMTA/400/450 were all faster than an M? I also thought you would put a W series ring and pinion in a letter series to make it have a faster ground speed. I reread that post...those were what I thought not what is real life. Just wanted to make that clear.

Are some SMTA gears faster than M gears? I know my SMTA goes faster down the road than my MD, but I haven't checked RPMs on either one.

(quoted from post at 20:40:16 02/23/12) RPM and tire size the same = M and SMTA 5th gear speed the same.

But 3rd and 4th are faster? I would guess the 5th gear speed in my SMTA is more likely not going up to full speed.

Contact Kevin at DaytonTractor Parts 814-257-9880. Tell him John told you to call. He will have the gears.

Yes he is from Henderson , Minnesota. It looked like a decent M and he said it had the low gears. I think his price for the whole tractor was very reasonable, seems to me it was 850.00 ???? Search Minneapolis Craigs List. Probably be easier to buy that whole tractor than to install the gears in yours.

yes 2nd 3rd and 4th are faster than standard straight m gears. 1595 high idle in an m, 1600 in super m. maybe .001mph faster in high gear.
