Continuing H saga

I am still working on fixing the slop in steering on H that was my dads. It seems like everything was worn out. I replaced all the bushings last winter. The sector gear and worm were worn, so I replaced them this winter. It is much better, but there is still a little slop in the bolster. I will replace that next winter.

I guess you might as well just plan to replace all those parts to get it tightened up. It looks like the lubrication was not kept up on it.

It is one of the most used elements on the tractor. Serious force is put on it through the front wheels, and the steering wheel (good old armstrong power steering) if it is not greased. or the oil checked in the gearbox, it will wear out in 50 to 60 years. I would call it a reasonable expectation of service life. At least they do respond to new parts! Jim

I am seeing improvement with every replacement. We are using it to rake hay now, the farms are several miles apart. I was not comfortable driving it with the wobble. I will replace the bolster shaft next winter.

You mightmake sure you have both the oil seals installed in the bolster. The bottom one was missing on my H, so no amount of oil or grease would stay in. I pulled in new seals, and it works fine.,

Just a note on the upper bolster reservoir. I had changed the lower seal in my H and it would still seep. I ended up putting Lucas Hub Oil in it and it works very good, no more leaks. Allan.

I replaced the seals when I replaced the bushings last winter. It holds gear lube fine. It was totally dry when I got it. I think that is when the damage was done.

I have rebuilt the carb, replaced clutch, water pump, radiator and added live hydraulics. I will replace the bolster shaft and start fixing rear end leaks next winter. The motor does not use any oil and runs great.

It was my dads favorite tractor, so it is a labor of love.

Nice to hear you are fixing up your dad's H. Mom still talks fondly of your dad now & then. Corn crop I planted with my H last year was the best corn crop I have ever had, gonna use it on beans this year. Take care!

It will take me at least one more winter to fix all the leaks. I will finish painting it then.
