Farmall M Throttle linkage

I would appreciate anyone that can help me out here.I am restoring a "52" farmall M.This is kind of hard to explain but here is the problem.I took off the carb while painting the tractor.I rebuilt the carb and put it back on.Now for some reason the linkage is out of line. With the top throttle linkage in the slow idle position, its like the governor is in the wide open position.I checked and made sure the tube shaft is in the notch in the carb correctley and it is.If I unhook the bottom linkgage from the top linkage and move the bottom linkage by hand the governor shaft moves counter clockwise like it should(is this correct). But when I hook it all back up like it should be its like now the governor is wide open.I must be over looking somthing. This has to be somthing easy I hope.
Thanks Tim

The link in the tube is the problem 99.9% of the time. Otherwise be sure you have the throttle plate in correctly, or perhaps the throttle rod to the governor is out of line or something.

OK,thanks,Its weird because if I take the carb off and put the linkage together like it should be and try to work the throttle at the steering wheel it will not turn the governor link in the tube, but if I unhook the bottom linkage rod going from the top rod to the governor and operate the bottom rod by hand it will turn the governor link in the tube. I am getting frustrated because this is the fourth farmall I have restored and have had these things apart alot and now I cannot figure this simple thing out .

When you pull the throttle lever back the rod passing behind the manifold to the governor lever should move down.

Yes,it should but it seeme like it is in some sort of a bind or the governor is actually all the way open.I did notice somthing when I ran out to look at it.Should the governor spring be loose or is that normal when it is at the idle spot?

Normall for the spring to relax when throttle is closed. Where the spring hooks front and rear will have more play on some than others due to wear. IH also made changes in the parts and newer ones were tighter with some having bushings in the hole.

When someone is not familiar with that linkage bolted to the head it is pretty easy to assemble it incorrectly. Like Slater said, when you pull throttle lever back toward you on seat, it should push the rod behind manifold down and it should push it far enough down to bottom out on the set screw in the governor. When full forward it should touch upper set screw for idle position and spring should hang loose.
