With no batteries on the second and third tractor, I guess they must be pull started even though they are gas start diesels. Have to assume the tractors are run in 3rd or 4th. Must be tough on the first tractor's clutch.

It would seem like gas fueled tractors would be safer. A kill switch could abort any attempt for the operator-less tractors to overrun the leader. There must be stories of accidents.

Never seen a discussion on how the empty tractors were controlled. Hydraulic clutch, maybe? Probably no throttle control. Wonder if the farmer had any other tractors to pull such a rig if it got stuck. I suppose four tractors hooked together would do the job. Seems like it would have to be pulled forward. Can't always do that.

Read the second link. It covers all that stuff.

(quoted from post at 20:21:47 02/06/12) I'm assuming the 55gallon barrel strapped on the last one is for extra fuel.

Yep, there was a second one on the other side. It said it could run for 24 hours on the 110 gallons of fuel it carried. The weird thing is they dropped the third tractor when planting. Not sure how they got fuel after that...
