I have follwed Jonh T's procedure and have the following..I had the genny tested and it is fine. It does not have the asjustable third brush it is stationary. With the field grounded output of genny is 1.2v. As soon as I momentarily jump gen and bat on reg it goes to 10.3 v. When ground removed from field it drops back to 8.2v...I am using a healthy 8v battery. If i shut the tractor off I need to follow same routine. Is this a bad regulator? Thank you.

A healthe 6v battery would be easiest. The coil in the regulator that is designed to latch the gen to the battery (cutout) is set for 6 volt operation. It may also be damaged, there are more than one winding involved in its construction. It will have issues with 8 volts untill adjusted for latching voltage, and unlatching discharge current. Again least trouble is a 6 volt batt, with good heavy cables of 00gauge. Jim
