I recently purchased a farmall M. It wasn"t running when i got it. While trying to get it started I noticed the firing order was opposite what it should be. Firing order started form the back of engine and came forward. Is this correct for the M. My other farmalls start at the front of the engine with firing order. I did get tractor started but was running rough. I switched fireing order to front of engine 1,3,4,2. Tractor would not start.Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be wrong. Thanks

Sounds like the distributor is installed rotated 180 deg . Or the distributor timing gear is installed off 180 deg.

It's not a big deal. Simplest solution is to mark the distributor where the #1 plug wire is and forget about it.

It doesn't matter which cylinder is #1 (front or rear) as long as the "#1" cylinder is on top dead center on the compression stroke when you start wiring.

#1 can be any of the 4 nipples on the cap if the distributor has been pulled and put back in wrong. Get #1 cylinder that one close to the radiator at TDC and look at which nipple the rotor points to. Then go from there. Also when your getting it to TDC on the compression stroke make note of which way the rotor is turning

yes #1 can be in any position, but its nice to keep things on the same page as it came from factory with #1 in the 2 oclock position on dist. easy to pull dist and reposition wire to proper spot with #1 cyl. on compression at tdc. #1 cyl. on an engine is the front cyl. 99 % of the time.
