Farmall 300

Is the Farmall 300 basically just a new version of the H ? Were the TA's a problem on them ?, & the old question, what's an average price in average condition here in Pa. ? Thanks as always for any in put!

A new version of the H is a drastic understatement even if true. The TA is not a problem, it is a blessing. Switch fromTA to Non TA by moving the lever as rapidly as possible. It is like riding the clutch if moved slowly.
It has a Live PTO, and a live Hydraulic. It also has Power steering, and substantially more power. Value of a 300 in operating condition with no smoke, Very good rubber, and good sheet metal, is worth 3500. Bad rubber takes off 1000. Bad TA takes off 800, bad engine takes off 2500. Jim

The 300 was larger tractor than a H , had more power, live Hydraulics, live PTO, Torque Amplifier, optional power steering. The TA was not a big problem, but they did wear out and were often abused. I have seen them sell at auction anywhere from $1500 to $2500.

Ok, Would it be considered power wise some where between an H & an M ? This one doesn't have the power steering, but has new rear tires. Haven't seen it yet, but he's asking $2600.

It is close to the power of a Early M. It has less cubes, but more RPM, compression, and Cam. The torque rise off of max HP will be less than an M, but they are so much handier than an M that the comparison fails. If it runs well and is straight, the lack of PS will make no difference. W/O PS they steer like an H. That price seems good. Oil pressure when warmed up should be above 20. When cold in the area of 75psi. Clean coolant, clean engine oil, and a working Tach (if equipped) will tell much. If the clutch pedal moves left and right 1/2" or more, it may have a lot of hours on it. Jim

Since I grew up on a small dairy farm in N.E. Penna, and had the pleasure (when in high school) to drive one of the first 300 tractors offered at our small town dealership, I have an emotional attachment to this model of International tractor. Can you tell the general area in Penna. this tractor is at? Hope you find it to be worthy of your purchase - know you WILL enjoy this model much more than an M, even though the M may have an edge for torque rise
(lugging capability).

The 300 is HEAVILY based on the H design.

It's "bigger" only in that it is slightly longer due to the TA section that was added ahead of the transmission, and slightly taller due to the hood styling.

Underneath the hood, many of the components are identical to the H. The main differences are the TA, live PTO, and the hydraulic system.

If you park the two side-by-side you can see the family resemblance.

In my honest opinion, basing it on central, Southern Ohio pricing, it sounds high to me. Probably closer to $1750 would be about the top mark for money on it.

I bought a 1956 Farmall 300 in "average" condition 3 years ago near PGH with a 2 bottom plow and brush hog for $2500.

Take it from someone who actually owns one, the only simularity between a 300 and an H is the name Farmall.
H then the super H, then the H-TA was introduced as the F300.
39hp, live pto, live hydraulics, disc brakes. Mine has three remotes & early fast hitch, I wouldn't take less that 4 grand for mine, you can find them cheaper, but usually with only one or two remotes, or a standard drawbar, or a lot of issues.
I have never figured out why so many here are afraid of rebuilding a tractor with a T/A. The parts have become much cheaper than a few years ago and are much more available. They work great for what they were intended for, hard pulls & plowing.
They were not designed to be used to slow a heavy load, or used for engine braking downhill, but in a hard pull, you can't beat one, anyone who has plowed with an H & got into some hard clay can vouche for the handiness of using a tractor with a TA.
My F300 does not have power steering, it doesn't need it, I rebuilt the steering bolster top to bottom, I can turn it stop to stop with just the spinner. If you are looking for a nimble, handy row crop tractor, you can't go wrong with a F300. Just my .02 worth.
There is nothing better looking than a restored F300.

Hi rhtx55: That-a-way to say it.. I'll agree since I have one 300 and two 350 rowcrops. All have power steering and 2 point Fast hitches.. Also have an extra parts 300. The main key to all tractors is "IF" they are in good internal condition.. Nothing kills the fun quicker then forced into making big $$ repairs. ag

I agree to a point, but any piece of equipment with 50 plus years of use is going to need a thing or two, we all hope we can get by with as little as possible, but I beleive most of the one-owner barn finds have already made their way into the market by now.
We all still have one " fall in your lap" occaisonally, but they are getting fewer all the time.
I hate to see anyone taken advantage of on mechanical issues,
so caveat emptor. Problem is, once you start fixing one up, it's hard to stop.
See what I mean..nuff said.

I wish I had kept our 300 out of our sale and put my H through it. Ours had a motor rebuild in 99 and was repainted but my uncle parked it out in the sun with the drawbar on the ground, it ran out of gas and I couldn't get gas in it and start it before it got rained on and ruined the paint.

I have a 300 and like it except for the steering,
the trip bucket makes it tuff. May I show my
ignorance and ask what you mean by TA????

TA is short for Torque Amplifier.
Any tractor with a loader will benefit from power steering, wide or narrow.
