Let me go into detail a little deeper, I am fixing this tractor up for another guy, It had not ran in twenty years, I had it started yesterday and it ran decent, it has been changed over to 12 volts with the 6 volt starter left on it, today when I tried it I know I broke the spring. Is their a heavy duty drive made for these or will the M diesel drive work?

I have run my SMTA with 12 volt and 6 volt starter for years with no problem. Draper Tractor (www.drapertractor.com) lists the drive and also just spring if that is what you need.

The old spring that broke was how old? Thirty, forty, FIFTY years old?

How many thousands of starts has it gone through?

You don't need a "heavy duty" spring. The OEM one is just fine, it just needed to be replaced.

THere is also a new series drive with a different system. it has a cushon in the pinion that makes it work. It also has a non driving spring. Jim

I have run into that a few times with Moline or IH converted to 12V on a 6V starter with very heavy GA battery cables.
A cheap easy fix has been to replace 1 or both battery cables with the skinny walmart type 12V cables. That will kill starter power just enough to prevent breaking that cushion spring, yet still crank 4 times as fast as the 6V setup.
