looking for info on 424, are they live pto? the one i could be interested in is a gas, no power steering, but is listed to have wet lines. not much other info is given in add, except for that it runs good. price is 2500. just kinda looking for feedback on it as i have no knowledge of them. i know i could just call the seller but i figure someone will be able to shed some light on it before or if i were to call about it. i have read some of the arcives and seems to have a good following. but didn't see anything about live pto. thanks

They have a live PTO, about 35HP at the pto. I was hard up for money and watched a diesel 424 go at a auction for $1500. Im sure its a good tractor. Ive never owned one but have a 484, its built like a tank and was built in 1979 but has hydraulics better then some of the brand new tractors.

A 424 was available both live power and non live. Live PTO was a two step clutch. Power steering was full hyd. No mechanical connection.

The live PTO was an option on the 424, but I think most had it. It is a two stage clutch. Push the clutch pedal down half way and the tractor stops, but PTO continues to run. Clutch all the way down stops both tractor and PTO. Power steering was also an option. The ones without power steering tend to be a bit worn and have steering play. The 424 also has a separate hydraulic system and reservoir that does not use the transmission as the reservoir. I used to own one of these and it was a tough old tractor. I got rid of it because it did not have power steering. I had some troubles with the fuel cut off solenoid on the carburetor and also problems with the lift. I had to replace the piston in the cylinder on the three point hitch lift. The original cylinder had a leather seal which wore out and then wore out the piston. Many Mahandra parts will work on the 424 and are cheaper than the parts from IH. The early Mahandras were almost complete copies of the IH 424 series. If the tractor is in good condition it should be a good buy at $2500

424's are nearly indestructable. Non-power steering is a little cumbersome in tight spots, keep the u-joints and "bearings" on the steering shaft well lubricated (that white grease in a spray can works well) and it is not so bad to steer.
