farmall md overhaul

Hey guys been kicking the idea around my md has 9100 hrs on original hr meter think its time for a overhaul what's a ball park cost for a complete overhaul including machineing the head???

i am sure you could sink 10,000 if you wanted to. its not apart and little info. so just a figure.head alone can be over 1000.00.just because it has 9100 hrs. dont mean a thing.have seen a lot of cat engines with 35,000 to 50,000 hrs. its the service and care that counts.

If you replace parts that are beyond reuse, and reuse every component from springs to valves and timing gears, it could still run into 3000. If you spend time finding unbelievable deals it might be less. If it is using oil, and getting difficult to clear up on diesel, It is time. Do not let the head work recess the valves into the head, they are critically placed for proper compression. Jim

That was my guess. My WD-9 with all new bearings, $400 of head work (nothing out of the ordinary, but all new guides and fixing seats) and machine work will be all of $3000.

he said complete, and i am talking fan to clutch and the engine is all rebuilt to new and factory spec"s, no way going to get er done for 3000.00 when a sleeve and piston set for the 350 is all of that.just wont happen. my friend has close to 20,000 in his ih 660.what about labour?

Are MD engine bearings even available now?

It is my understanding that no one is making those bearings anymore, so there is only a limited supply of new bearings still on parts warehouse shelves. They can still be found but are very expensive. New old stock main bearing sets are around $500-600 while a set of rod bearings will run you about another $200.

The same is true for the WD-9. I would maybe put the prices at 10% higher than that.

You mean me? I don't count the clutch as part of an engine rebuild so I didn't include it. I also have considered the possibility of getting new pistons and sleeves 0 so I will be taking the best 4 out of 12 piston and sleeve combos that I have.

I just bought a used TD-9 engine from the junkyard for $150. I talked to the guy who took it there and he said it had been rebuilt in the last 25 years. Hopefully it has a (good) set of 4.5" pistons and then my sleeve problem will be solved.

$5000.00-$6000.00 is probably a fairly realistic number provided you are going to do the work yourself (minus the machining). Just remember there are always unforseen cost when starting any project like that.
