Farmall H Steering Shaft Shims?

I need some ideas on the best way to fix the free play on the 2 areas where the steering shaft is mounted. I tried a piece of copper pipe on my last H I worked on but it kept working out of the collars.

The part on the steering post is still available aftermarket, the front one I am not sure of.

randy, see if you have a machine shop near you. they can install some bronze bushings in there to take up the slack. they have bushings that are oil impregnated that dont require grease, or you can install zerks and give em a shot of grease every now and then.

My H was sold to me by a former IH mechanic many years ago. It looks like he took some bronze shims, curved them a nd slid them in place on top of the shafts, and brazed them into place to take up slack. Whatever it is, it is a good tight fit.

I did mine with readily available bushings from McMaster-Carr.

They work very well.Just measure your shaft diameter for the I.D..The O.D can be ordered in different sizes.(Be sure to drill a hole for the grease zerk in the bushing.:)

Randy: I have the cast steering shaft bracket for an H that you show in the second photograph. It appears to be perfectly round and in good shape. It is yours for free if you want it. Email me with a mailing address and I will ship it. Keep in mind that both parts wear so the bracket is only half of the problem, but it might stop the rattle from sloppy parts. Ellis

Good point you mentioned ellis,

I had to build up my steering shaft.

You can also use an over legnth bushing also.If it is slightly longer than the bracket is,it will "catch" an unworn section of the shaft on top and bottom of it.

Thanks for the ideas everyone!! I think I will try the sleeve bearing first and if that does not whorl I will take Ellis up on his offer.

Trying to get this 3rd H done this winter ; )
