First time this has ever happened. I cant get it in
gear, it just grinds. It almost feels like the
clutch is not disengaging. gosh i hope it is a easy
fix I was hoping to sell it this weekend at a
auction.

Block the pedal down a couple days and see if that fixes it. If not start it up and let it warm a bit so it is easy to restart. Shut it down and if you have a big open area start it in as high a gear as you can and drive it around with the pedal held down. Drive it till it pops free. If you can hook up a load behind even better

thats what the frenchman said when his horse died. "thats sure funny he didnt do that before"!ah ha ha.

Your clutch disc is stuck fast to the flywheel. You need some help to pull start the engine. When it starts puch the clutch in and hit the brakes that should break it loose. Your puller in front doesent want to stop when the engine runs or you mite run into him till you get the disc broke free.

all of these are great sugestions, on my 1940 A the thowout bearing went bad and wore the fingers off the presure plate. Should be able to see whats going on thru the holes in the bell housing good luck & be carefull, stumper

Agreed, just be REAL careful. It's easy to take a clutch for granted and forget how important it is to safety. Think it through before you jump on and start it up.

Remember that you can't stop without killing the engine.

And remember that you have to keep the clutch pedal depressed the whole time for your efforts to make any difference.

It's a weird sensation to start moving while you're trying to start the tractor, but it can be done. Just be damn sure you've got plenty of open space around you that you can circle in.

If it doesn't release after a few minutes of putting around, try tapping the brakes occassionally (with the clutch still pressed in).

if that doesn't work - try pulling something heavy but moveable.

I'm not a big fan of chaining the tractor to a tree - but you will get that suggestion, and it does work.

Same with having somebody pull start you. Not a big fan of that either, but would do that before chaining to a tree. I would do it with the motor killed, and tap the brakes a few time while moving. Again, be sure to have the clutch depressed the whole time, it's feels so wrong, so it's easy to forget you need to do it.

If it was literally okay yesterday, and not okay today, then it's more than just a clutch disk rusted to the flywheel...

It takes more than overnight to rust up a clutch.

Your pressure plate gave out. Minimally you need to replace the pressure plate, which requires splitting the tractor at the bell housing.

You'd be money ahead selling it as-is, but I don't know about an auction with it in that condition. Someone will inevitably try to drive it. Either they'll start it in gear and run someone over, or they will grind the gears off to a nub trying to shift it.

If you canget someone to help you,With the tractor off have someone push the clutch down while you look in the bellhousing hole.See if the release bearing pushes the fingers in.Ifit dose the plate is stuck if it dose not move the fingers it is broke.
