my "new" farmall 300

Well I recently was given (yes given) a farmall 300. It hasnt ran in 3+ years so I towed it home and put new plugs, cap, roter and an oil change, poured some marvel mystery oil on the cylinders let that sit for a while and with some cranking she fired right up! But it keeps flooding its self out. I pulled the carb off and cleaned it really good still the same problem. also when it runs it gradually idles up and up then it quits.
Any suggestions?
this is my first older tractor so...

recheck needle and seat for float valve, check float adjustment, and that flaot is not hanigng up, also make sure flat is not heavy or has a hole in it..

to check for a pinhole in a float, microwave a jar of water till it boils.. remove frommicrowave and using needle nose, plung float into water.. water will heat the flaot, and if there is a pinhole it will make a microstream of bubbles from t he hole.

Please do not immerse that float in boiling water. The trapped air inside the float will expand and rupture the float. Use water that is just warm to the touch instead. If the float has a hole, the wam water will detect it.

Did you use a needle with the neoprene tip? Those things are a real pain.

I'd try to find a straight steel type needle/seat.

On my H, I was having a similar problem, and it turned out the float was catching on the side of the float bowl. I do know a couple of other guys have had that problem with letter series tractors as well, but I don't know if it was ever on a 300. Still worth a check though.

Jason is correrct, an H float will slightly touch the side of the bowl. I've taken mine down several times, and got it down to where it onyl slightly touches, ..... but it still does. I think it must be real tricky to get it back together perfectly.

Allan, the all steel needles have been obsolete for several years now. The Viton tipped needle is much better. You just need to clean it and the seat really good before installing. I use aerosol carb and brake cleaner. A little shot of silicon spray lube after cleaning doesn't hurt either.

What is it that makes you think its flooding? Smokes
alot, gas pours out of the carb? Almost sounds to me
like a coil problem the way its dieing, but the idle
going up like that, makes me think the float is
sticking, but that wouldn't make it speed up unless
its flooding to start with.

If it increases speed then dies it sounds like it's starving out rather than flooding.

I'd check for a good flow of gas into the carb, pull the line and little screen that's inside the card at that end and see if you get a good flow. Rust in the tank blocking flow is a common problem that causes what you describe.
