Carb kit not right.

Now that we have the fuel bowl fun behind us...

I went to put my carb back together last night (Zenith 52499 DB) and ended up with parts that either were different or simply didn't fit.

The kit I have is a Tisco C509V which I double checked and should be right for that carb.

One of the small replacement pilot jets (I guess that's what you call them) fits but it's much shorter then the original. The idle jet doesn't screw it at all, the tip is bigger and instead of having a normal button screw head it had a big thumb screw.

I can use the old pilot jets, they clean up easily enough but the idle jet is a killer as the one that was in the carb is really buggered up.

Did I just get a messed up kit? I bought it a few years ago, I don't even remember from who...

i think i see your problem.

you said 'tisco'

tisco is to tractor parts as lucas is to electrical parts...

Your problem is the brand/place you got the kit. Those kits are at best the cheapest made in the land of almost right kits and I NEVER use them. I buy good Walker brand kits form my local O'Reilly's auto parts store. They cost less then $20 most of the time

See, it's funny, I just used a Tisco kit on my SM and it worked perfect, no problems what so ever.

I'll look and see what I can turn up, maybe I'll just pick up the idle jet and go with some new parts and some old ones.

Sorry soundguy. Those carb kits ALL come from the same exact place, and no matter what company name is on the package, they all have the same components. Tisco is as good as it gets. Unfortunately, that isn't good enough.

Rusty, I know you sell these kits, have you ever run into these problems?

I mean the "IDLE ADJUSTING SCREW" is so way different then anything I've seen before.

The other little fixed jet I was talking about is the "Idle Jet No. 18" (62172D).

I think I'll just use the old one and try and by the correct "IDLE ADJUSTING SCREW"

Not necessarily, I put a Tisco engine kit in my C last summer--at least it has a recognizable name, unlike the noname ones of some of the others. Although I didn't buy it from them the local CaseIH dealer sells Tisco kits. BUT, I prefer paying the price and getting my carb kits from CaseIH.

I've had good luck with carb kits from napa, the one I pt in my cub a while back, I'm pretty sure was napa.

I HAVE bought tisco kits for MS carbs for fords.. MOST of the time they are ok.. I have found some junk though.

My local CNH dealer sells some tisco stuff.. but i just generally don't like it.

IMHO.. the kits with tisco names on them probably have parts that come from the same 'rice eating' countries as some of the kits with no names on them.

on the other hand, I've bought many gasket and seal kits from CNH and was quite surprised to find lots of places of manufacturer, italy, ireland, etc.. many places OTHER than china sometimes.. :)

the ireland one surprised me.. :)

All engine kits are foreign made, unless you get one actually "made" by CaseIH, then they are likely outsourced. CaseIH doesn't actually make anything for the old tractors. Many of the gaskets etc come from Mexico, and other places -- but they are made to IH specs. The seals are usually made by either National or Chicago Rawhide (now known as SKF). Bearings are made by the major US companies, likely also outsourced. The seals, bearings, carb kits, etc from CaseIH are quality products, expensive? -- Yes. The gaskets in the Tisco kits are usually Felpro or another major company. But in 4 tractors I have had no problems with any gasket, seal or bearing for any tractor. I haven't told you anything you don't already know as I am sure Ford does the same thing. I have no control over any of this, but for the major parts, such as engine parts, I at least like to see a name that I recognize, even if it does no good. This site sells mostly Tisco, along with some noname kits.

yep.. I see pretty much the same stuff on fords.

I've bought seal kits from here, and local at the dealer.. only about 3-4$ difference many times.

so far I've never had a seal or gasket issue between the two.

I will say that I like CNH packaged lift piston orings better than some of the no names, and as far as ford n hyd pumps, i have seen issues in gaskets that were not the same thickness as oem causing problems.. but it's rare.

the only *real* issue I've ever come across was steering gearbox thrust bearings... I got some chinese ( timken !!! ) bearings and the cage was the wrong profile, so as correct preload was set, the cage would crush.. went thru 2 sets of these crap bearings before I switched to another supplier / manufacturer and got some bearings that were correct. ( these ar ehte worm thrust bearings used commonly in the 47-64 and possibly later manual steering boxes )

I was surprised to see made in china printed on the timken bearing boxes.. and not surprised that they crushed. I noticed this on a steering rebuild on a 4 cyl 2000 I did earlier this year. had that box apart about 3 times trying to get it adjusted.. couldn't figure out where the play and binding was till i noticed the bearings kept crushing and cages popping :(

figures.. and I'm no newb when it comes to a ford steering box.. but them dern cheap bearings were perplexing...

Although I haven't used a Tisco engine kit (yet) this has been my general feeling on their parts. Like I said the kit I put in my SM carb was perfect.

At this point I might just have to chalk it up to either one or two parts simply finding their way into the wrong package or the wrong label going on the parts that where picked.

Everything else looks good, just those two parts. I think I'll just reuse the little fixed jet and try and get a new adjustable one from CaseIH.

OK, I just went to Tisco's site and I think I know what's going on.

My package says "C509V", which is what I need for a 52499 D, but it's contents look a lot more like a "C509AV". The C509AV is for a different carb (10514A) then mine.

I think it was just mislabeled.

All that being said, the picture of the contents of a C509V doesn't show the idle adjust screw or the idle fixed jet as being included, which seems really weird. I'm tempted to order another but I would hate to get it and it not even include the parts I need.

Probably just a low quality carb kit. Alot of carb rebuild kits these days are complete junk. I know it"s hard to find good rebuild kits for GM Qjet carbs. Most of the kits are just low grade generic spec parts that will never work right.
