I just bought a Farmall M and to be honest, I don't know much about it. I currently have a 230 so I'm not a Farmall newbie. Anyways, the serial number says its a '48 (FBK158235), but after looking at some pictures, I'm not sure if its the correct motor. I found a stamped number on the engine that looks like 18127..Does that help or do I need the casting number? Also, most of the pictures I see have the cap/rotor on the horizontal. Mine is in the vertical position-Mean anything? I want to verify this before I order the manual, parts book, etc. THANKS for help.

Posting some pics here might help us spot something that's not right.

The tractor is out to my folks so I"ll check it over when I get back out there. Thanks for the help. Besides the serial number/casting number/etc., is there anything else that will tell me it"s not correct?

I will recheck. I do know that it is the stamped numbers, not cast into the block. I am going to restore and use it (it has a loader). I guess it doesn't matter on the engine as long as it is an M engine...I think ?? Orginally, the motor number should be around 154000 to 158000 ?? Thanks again

Your tractor serial # was assembled in march of 48. Non diesel engines for that month started at serial # 152971 and ended at 156060. Most times M tractors in the serial range you have are around 4400 to 4700 numbers higher than the engine. May not be the only reason for a lower # on engines, but one is ever time a diesel engine was put in a M chassis the engine and chassis numbers for a non diesel tractor recieved a greater spread. M engine should have a prefix in front of the engine serial # of FBKM. C 248 engines used in other places used a different letter prefix before there own set of engine serial numbers. In other words I disagree with some posters about the same engine serial # sequence for a M engine and all C248 engines.

Maybe I missed the "5". If I did, that would be correct...right?

How could the engine serial be LESS than the tractor serial?

The C248 was used in the W-6, I-6, T-6, and other applications. Engines had one sequence of serials, each line of tractors had its own.

If anything I would expect the engine serial to be higher by a few thousand.

Anyway, there is STAMPED, and cast. Some people use the terms interchangeably, and incorrectly.

Numbers stamped into the block are on a machined flat smooth surface. The numbers are indented into the metal and are very crisp.

Numbers cast into the block are rough like the rest of the casting. The numbers PROTRUDE from the surface of the block and are sometimes rough to decipher.

A block serial number is stamped. All other numbers are cast. There is a part number, and a casting code at the very least on each block.

If 18127 is the engine serial #? That tractor number and engine didn't come in the same tractor. Tractor serial # 158235 should have a engine # between 153000 and 156000. Or to be closer a engine around 4400 numbers less.

Thanks. I do not believe it has live hydralics, but then again, I do not know much about the M's. I will learn though

On Ms,the tractor sn and the engine sn do not match. That engine was used in other applications(power units,W series tractors). That verticle distributer is an aftermarket 'addition',probably when live hydralics were added.

Its probably a M, vertical distributor was a replacement sold by GM Delco-Remy parts to upgrade a original Magneto equipped engine, the visual clue is a vertical distributor. M gas engines were basically same.
