hi i was thinking about buying a tractor and found an international 454.are they a good tractor and what all is the bad if there is any.like cracking blocks hard finding parts etc

IMHO you may have problems finding parts. There are not nearly as many of these out there as H's and M's.

Agree with Mkirsch... parts a little harder to find as there weren't as many of these. Around 9000 I think.

Imported from England in the early '70's . Next full generation would be the 484's

Fairly solid tractor. Easier to get on/off than an M or an H. Has IPTO and live hydralics. 8x4 transmission. Hyrastatic steering. Think the D-179 was a solid engine though and shared with a few other IH products so not as hard to get parts.

Parking brakes generally went out on 'em.

All I can tell you is that I have a 464 diesel (almost the same tractor), and the hour meter is broken at 15,299. It has been that way for many years! There has never been any engine, clutch, transmission, or hydraulic work done on it that I know of. We did overhaul the injector pump and alternator this year. It cost $600. It is an incredibly solid tractor. It will run and run and run. The 464 has done its share of plowing (3-16 in 3rd gear), but now we mostly cut and bale 14 acres of hay per year with it. It gets 50-100 hours per year, and it cranks up great even in cold weather. Fuel economy is INCREDIBLE! Not even 2 gallons an hour pulling a JD 336 baler! If I were you, I would buy the tractor if you need it.

Hi, my brother has a 454 Diesel with over 15,000 hrs and still going strong. D-179 is 3cyl version of 4 cyl D-206 and 6 cyl D-358. The rear end is same as the all 74,84,95 Series tractors.
The most common problem is parking brake and Diesel in the crankcase. Parking brake is caused by Operator driving with brake engaged. The Diesel in crankcase is caused by front lip seal failure on injection pump. The lip seal failure is caused by low sulphur Diesel fuel, so add Diesel fuel conditioner ever time you re-fuel.

Hi Kevin, my brother lives in Canada and he has a 454, 495, 684 and 3230 which are all the same series of tractors 74,84,94 and 3x. Parts he has used in last 10 years, 2 lip seals for injection pump, 1 oil pressure sender switch, 3x clutches/pressure plates and bearings, a starter, oil, hydraulic and fuel filters. He also has replaced all the gen/alternators with GM Delco alternators from an auto wrecker for about $20 each.
He has no problem getting parts from Caseih.

i was looking at info on them it said 12 volt for the gas one and a 6 volt for the diesel one.is that correct diesel one only uses the 6 volt battery? usually other way around

Kevin, the Diesel was a 12V system -ve ground. Original British spec may have used 2x6V batteries in series to give 12V. There was a lengthy discussion on this form earlier in the week as to which was better, 2x6V in series or 1 large 12V battery. We always used 1 large 12V battery.

A 1970's tractor would be pretty useless without at least one hydraulic remote.

These came with at least one remote, and usually two remotes.

D179 is 3 cyl version of D239 (484/684)

The D155 is the 3 cyl version of the D206 (385/585)
