how do you tell which carb you have, to order a kit, do you go by serial #, my carb has no #,
they list 3 or 4 different kits.

I buy my kits from O'Reilly's auto parts store. Basic kit but has the gaskets needed for most all the carbs. Pretty cheap also at less then $25 Plus if you take the carb and or the gasket with you to compare you can be sure your getting the right one

Old, how on earth do you get O'Reilly's to find the M carb set????? Out here in Az the first thing the parts desk asks is " make model year", and as soon as you tell 'em 1948 Farmall M, farm tractor, they just look at us like were crazy, because they ain't got it in the computer. Or at least that's always the reception we've gotten in the past, to the point we just mail order from yt or one of the others! And since I know your into Farmall and AC, have you luck for carb kits for the W series at O'Reilly's?

I never have any problems getting the parts I need for tractors from O'Reilly's and if they do not have them they can point me in the right direction most of the time. But I have been getting parts from this store now for 30 plus years so I have trained them well over the years which is the key you show them what a book is LOL

The number of your carb is on a small, round brass disc riveted to the area where the governor tube attaches. It is probably buried under years of grease, dirt, and a few layers of paint, but in reality it makes very little difference, because the kit you want would be for the gasoline only version. Even if the carb you have was originally a kerosene/distillate version, more than likely it has already been rebuilt using the components from the gasoline version. It really makes no difference who you buy the kit from because the kits all come from the same place (China), with the possible exception of the kit from Case-IH, and hang onto your checkbook for that one.

I will suggest disassembling the carb before acquiring any parts. It just might be that a thorough cleaning and a new gasket set is all that it needs.

Ha! Amen to that!

I always laugh when people here suggest going to a local autoparts store for tractor parts.

Not in my area! (MA)

Same exact thing as you say - "year, make, model" if you're missing any one of those, they simply can't help you. If it's not a car or truck FORGET it.

If you make the mistake of telling them the part you're looking for is for a tractor, they'll mentally shut right down.

"oh, we don't sell tractor parts here". No matter how hard you try to explain a seal is a seal wheter it's on a car or a tractor.

Unless you can supply a cross reference to car, it's a waste of time.

Thank god for the internet - otherwise I don't know what I'd do.

Advance Auto and Auto Zone are exactly the way you said. However, our local NAPA is great about tractor parts. They carry carb kits, mufflers, coils, rotor buttons, I could go on and on. So, I guess it does depend on your location.

Very nice to hear it's not just an Arizona problem. Like was said, if it wasn't for the internet and the mail order co.'s, I don't know how some of us would ever get the parts we need. Just when Old posted saying he gets his kits through O'relley, thought there was somthing to say I didnt know, or that maybe things had changed--as it would be nice to run up to the local O'Relley instead of weighting on the mail.
