Water in oil

I noticed last night that my '41 B trans case was full of what looked like beige paint. I figured water has got in the oil, so I drained out almost 3 gallons of the stuff. Should I wash it out with something before putting the new oil in? Is 80W-90 gear oil what I should use?

Also, there is a round hole at the bottom of the bell housing about the size of a quarter next to the dust cover toward the front end. My Dad's '47 B does not have the hole. It looks like it was cast that way. There is nothing covering it now. Should that have a cover/plug as well?

Thanks so much.

Yea it will not hurt it to flush it at all. I had water in a tranny that also supplies oil for the hydraulics this spring. Replaced the shifter boot and and flushed and fresh Hy Tran.

Get some diesel in the tranny and drive around for a bit then drain, Mite not hurt to do it twice depending on what it looks like after the first flush. the open hole wont hurt anything as the opening hole for adjusting the clutch pedal clearence is not covered either. I have been using the diesel fuel for yrs when i get a new to me B. I usually need to replace the seals at the front and side of the tranny and also the final drives. That way there are no leaks when i get the new 90-140 lube.

80-90 will work fine - much better than the water that was in there.

Only 3 gallons of oil in the transmission of a B?

My book only shows it holds 6 quarts (1.5 gallons)!

Flush with kerosene or diesel. drain overnight, and then add the correct amount of 80W90 gear lube. Brand of your choice. I use Napa or Wolf's head.
