H starter problems

Last Sat. my 1950 H starter would spin but would not engage the motor.. first time in more than ten years. The tractor gets moderate light duty and used weekly. It has been converted to 12 v. I tried tapping on the starter casing but to no avail,so I took the 5 minutes to remove the starter and bring in to our local stater/alt. guy whom I have had good success with previously. He opened the starter within 5 minutes and found the spring had broke. He replaced the spring with a heavier spring he had around the shop, installed bushings, cleaned it up a little. It worked great on the bench test. I reinstalled it in the tractor and same thing...starter spins no engagement. Removed the starter turned the ring gear to different spot, same thing. Ring gear seems fine. There were no shims.Any suggestions? Thanks for your help

Take it back to that same shop and have him replace the starter drive.

A couple possibilities:

---

1 - Is the battery fully charged?

A low battery will still spin the starter, but not with enough "oomph" to drive the pinion into engagement with the ring gear.

Try jumping with from a good battery and see what happens.

---

2 - Did the starter guy also replace the bendix drive along with the busted spring? If yes, did he use a bendix with the correct rotation?

The H starter spins opposite from most other common bendix-drive starters. A standard rotation bendix won't work on an H starter.

Thanks for your replies. I brought the starter back in this a.m. to learn that one of the bolts holding the spring had snapped.Confused! The starter drive seemed to operate fine. The motor is not froze up,turns freely. I will try again with the installation unless something seem obvious to either of you .Thanks again.

I had my starter work pretty well, on a 12v system, but one of the guys recommended I connect the battery ground strap directly TO the starter bolt. (I had it connected to a frame bolt.) I did, and the starter REALLY spins the old motor, like never before.

If the new bolt and (bigger) spring still do not work, replace the entire drive setup with a newer type with a very much smaller spring and a cushon in the pinion drive. The old style helical spring setup is obsolete. Jim

I re-installed the starter after replacing the sheared bolt on the spring and it worked just fine. I do have the ground on the starter bolt. Thank you all for the suggestions.I do enjoy Farmalls and can remove and reinstall the starter in less than 1/10 the time to do the same thing on my Buick Park Avenue!Thank you fellas
