I looked for my M's serial number and all I could find was four rivets on the left side of the clutch housing where a plate had been at sometime. Was this where the SN would have been found? Is there anywhere else it could be found? It is my dad's first new tractor and I would like to track that down.

Yep ur plate is gone. get the casting codes and that will tell you what year.here is pic of serial# and a casting code

The engine serial number is stamped into a rectangular, raised area just below #1 spark plug. Depending on the year of your M, and IF the engine is original, that number will be the same as the chassis serial number.

I found the engine number and it checks out as a 1950 model. I don't think the engine was ever changed but who can say. Where can I find the year by the casting numbers? Now, to get it running...

If it is a 50 model post the engine serial number and I may be able to tell you the tractor serial the engine came in. Tractor may be newer than you think. Tractor serial will be at least 9000 higher than the engine that year.

The block number is 228999. It is preceded by what looks like FPKM

The transmission casting numbers are 8-11-T and 8002-DD.

Thanks for everyone's help.

8-11-T translates to August 11, 1950.

After looking at M tractors and serial numbers for years, I would say its almost 100% likely the tractor that that serial number engine came in was 238999. Starting part way into 1949 and later most all engine and chassis numbers end with the last three digits. After IH started puttimg diesel engines in M tractors the gas engines and chassis serial numbers started getting more apart. Later the M, the larger total of diesel engines installed in the chassis numbers resulting in more separation of gas, ker., dis. engine and chassis numbers.
Yes tractor would be a 1950. IH was making a lot of M tractors that year and some casting dates are close to the time built.
