H steering/bearing PIC

I'm continuing with breaking down my H for clean-up and repaint. I took the front cap off the steering column, and here's what I found. There were more parts of the bearing on top of the steering gear when I removed the top cover for the gear.

The bearing is common, NAPA will match it, or Motion Industries, or other bearing Supply house.
The Bearing must be a Deep Groove style it can be open, (no seals or shields) The number is on the side of the bearing race. Accept no Chinese bearing, as this bearing is responsible for all thrust on the worm gear. IT should cost ~15 to 20$ Jim

Isn't it nice when mechanical diagnosis is so easy! Anytime you can remove a cap or cover and utter the words, "Holy cr*p!"...it's usually pretty easy to tell what went wrong. Ha ha! Glad you found the problem though. You might as well slide in a new gasket and seal with the bearing. Might be a good time to replace the steering shaft u-joint since you've got it apart too.

Good luck with it.

This is the std original bearing, just a common open ball bearing, IH part number ST225, they will sub it to ST678, Std is now called ST225BT, ST678 is the pricey brng, it was made available for heavy duty use such as front end loader, by the way, this would fit fit the H up thru the 450 in the same place on steering, probably ok for a H, sure as H%$L wasnt tough enough for 450D. ST678 was a combination radial & axial brng with separate races. You just had to quiz the customer what he wanted, cheap or durable.
