656 Whiny Hydraulics

We bought a 656 and the hydraulic pump is whiny,
especially when its cold. I recently dumped the
hydraulic fluid and filter and filled with new IH
oil and filter, and it did not help the problem.
Any ideas?? The hydraulic system works perfectly,
just noisy.

Sounds like the suction is partially plugged or it is sucking air. Did you clean the screen that goes into the filter? It could also have a leaky seal at the input to the tranny case. We usually overfill it by 5 gallons to get the oil level above the seal so it doesn't suck air.

Grew up on 656s. The hydraulic is noisy by it's nature. Try to find a neighbors and compare the noise.

I had the same issue on a 686 and solved it by overfilling the trans
