A friend's father-in-law has a 340 with a bad PTO. The father-in-law is not at all mechanically inclined, so he took the PTO unit out of the tractor and dropped it off at the local CaseIH dealer to find out how much it was going to cost to fix.

Well, the dealer went ahead and rebuilt it to the tune of $1900... Never asked him whether he wanted it fixed or not... Just went ahead and fixed it and charged him for it.

There is no way he would've EVER approved a $1900 repair. The whole tractor isn't worth that much. Scumbags. Old man with health problems on a fixed income and they try to take him for a ride like that...

He's obviously not going to pay for it, but odds are good he's going to have to cut his losses and let the dealer keep the PTO unit.

What PTO units will fit in a 340? Does it have to be from another 340, or will a unit from a 300 or 350 also fit? I would assume a 504 PTO would be the same, but those are even rarer than 340s.

Not very ethical of a dealer to do that, unless the owner told him "whatever it takes". I think the dealers are used to working for farmers that need it right away and in a $100K tractor, $1900 is peanuts.

I feel for your father in law. I have had that
happen a couple of times with cars, even though I
told them to call first with an estimate. I hate to
go to the Case-IH dealer, except for very basic
items. I just recently checked the dealer when the
oil pump in my 340 wasn't working...$1,400 ouch,
needless to say that I just fixed it. As to the PTO
some won has one for $300 on fleaybay right now.

I think a pto from any 300 to 560 etc will fit, but
there are still the two types, planetery and clutch
type to contend with. A knowledgable salvage yard
would know. Far as a bill like that, this is what
happens in todays modern day world where one cannot
easily talk to the actual mechanic who will work on
it and tell him what you want. Too many chiefs and
not enough indians. Seen this happen, not good for
customer and not good in shop either. Some one gets
a new one chewed .

That would never happen to me. I would've kept buying used $100 PTOs until I got a good one. They are easy to remove and install.

But should I have been caught in that situation, I would've shaken the dealer's hand and congratulated him for owning a $1900 PTO. Then I would head for my vehicle and never set foot in the dealership again. The dealer got what he deserved.

504 uses the clutch type.

I think 340 could have used either depending on whether it is early or late.

IPTO lever on right will be planetary.

IPTO lever on left will be clutch type.

Yep as Pete said pretty much anything from a 300 up to 660 will work, just as long as its the same as that it's replacing as far as clutch or planetary type.

Umm... My late 340 has a clutch type and the lever is on the right. It also slips too much to run a mower, but I can dig post holes with it all day long. I would rebuild it, but the unbelievable cost of parts is holding me back. I just mow with the other tractor.

Thanks.

For the record, he specifically told them to see what's wrong and how much it would cost to fix.

He had no problems paying them for a couple hours of labor to tear it down and diagnose, but he wanted to know what the cost to fix was before they actually started putting parts in it.
