Magneto to Distributor Conversion...

Just wondering what all is involved to do a Mag to Dist. conversion on my BN? Is it just a simple unbolt/bolt up? (basically). I plan on eventually converting over to 12 volt like I did with my M.

You can convert your existing mag to a distributor by disconnecting the coil wir ein your mag that goes to the points. Install your auto type coil and if you're going to use 12 volts run a wire from your ignition switch to the + terminal on your coil, then a wire from the coil's neg terminal to the points. You need to run battery voltage to your ignition switch and disconnect the grounding wire on your mag. Hal

Purchase a Distributor from a B, BN, A, SA, C, or CS, 100 120 etc.
Do not get one from a cub, or H or M they have differing spark advance curvs.
Remove the mag, and put it on. A 6v coil will be fine, and eventually a ballast resistor can be used to make it OK for 12v.
The ignition button will need to be changed to one from a distributor equipped tractor, as the Mag button is a grounding kill switch, and cannot be made to control ignition source voltage.
A key switch is nice if you want added security.
(just OFF ON)
Put the distributor on the mount, a little timing, and there you are. Jim

Right, b/c H's & M's rotation is different than the smaller tractors. My BN has a mag button on it but its not hooked up, so I just turn the gas off and let it run itself dry.

When I go to change them, Would it help if I set my BN at TDC #1 cylinder and then took it off, then when I bolted the distrib. up set it so the rotor is at the #1 position on the cap?

All IH gas engines from the A & B up through the 450 use distributors that run clockwise. The diesel engines and the gas engines in the 9, 600, and 650 series run counterclockwise.

ohh ok, thanks for the correction.
