Rim repair.

I have like a 6 inch strip of rust on the two back rims of my H. The rust was jagged enough where it pierced the tube. My question is if i take some thin sheet metal and tack weld it into the rim, Smooth it out with filler top and bottom ( cut a square section of rust out) will it reapir the rim. I think that would be way cheaper then buying new rims. any suggestions.

I have repaired many rims that people told me could not be fixed. I weld a pieces of metal in but I do not just tack it I weld it all the way around. Grind down the ruff spots then coat with spray on bed liner which is a thick rubber like coating so as to keep any ruff spots form cutting the tubes. You would not believe some of the rims I have fixed just to see if it could be done and yep I did it

The rust may be farther than you think. My brothers tractor blew a rim and took a window out of his house. Felt like a half stick of 40% dynamite. Welding with same thickness material and making it as good as new is possible. A great weld is necessary. The fact that it got to the tube is serious. Jim

Im gauging wether or not I should look for a good set of used rims at a salvage yard or try and repair this.

Ive welded up a ton of rims, the tire shops here wont touch a rusty rim so you have to fix it your self or buy a new one.

I cut the bad spot out until I get into good solid steel. Then I replace the the bad spot with new material. I weld it in from both sides and smooth it out with a flap disk. You can run them tubless when Im done.

rust never stop eating away the metal once it starts, even though you cut enough out. do you want to waste all that time on repairing, when you can probably find some nice used ones....

I actually have an old moline that the rims where widened by 2" so the previous owner could install a set of 14.9 on them. It looked like it might have been very time consuming and tedious. But they have held up for a lot of years in the field and now it is a show tractor and I always show off the modifications as a fact for how the American farmer could make things happen.
