Looked at a couple...okay 6 1486s over the weekend. Noticed that 2 of them had 437 t stamped on the block and the other 4 had the usual 436 t. Whats the difference between the 2? Is one better or worse than the other? Thanks in advance.

IH at that time was making some changes inside, piston & rings, parting angle of con rod caps, cyl head rocker arms & stands, cam lifter diameter, intercoolers & inline inj pumps. I cant recall when exactly but simply means a later engine & higher serial number.

My plan is to build a puller out of one. Would one engine be a better candidate than the other or not really?

I would say yes, later production would be "aged" but still not have a lot of hours, it depends on how much in $$$ you would spend on mods, This engine is still in production by Navistar, I am not knowledgeable about about changes in the last 5 years tho.

The plan is to build a pro farm puller. Im hoping to get a 1486 before winter to get started but I didnt realize the newer and older ones had different engines so I figured id save a possible headache and ask ahead of time what the difference was.

Might as well build it once rather than twice. Talk to the locals. They are pretty willing to talk over here. I know Lemke Bros Machine and (drawing blank...they used to pull Tool Time and Diehard Deere) will build you a tractor. Only problem is they are Deere specialists. Jay Smithback in Utica, WI also knows quite a bit about anything that can pull.

BTW, if you are building a pro farm you darn well better get it right! One that has a chance of winning the class is worth more than my house! I would look into running something like Badger State 466/640 hot farm before I went straight into pros.

Seems I mis spoke haha sorry. Hobby stock is what I would like to build. But my rules are about the same as the badger 640 class I think....640 cube limit single turbo 3 in 3 out diesel only 9500 pound...theres more but you get the idea. Thanks for the help im sure ill be needing more!

I thought you were nuts for a minute! It still takes big ponies and big money to pull Badger State Hot Farm.
We have South Central Wisconsin Tractor Pullers down here. It is a little easier to compete, but they are still 1000 hp tractors. Some say they are less, but there is no way. The dumbest part is they have a 2.6 x 3 turbo rule. On the other hand if they change the rules all the time you have to keep on buying.
