400 PTO Whine

The unit on this tractor looks to have come off of a 560. Works ok, but when not engaged it whines to beat the band. When it"s engaged, it"s a quiet as a new one. When you increase the rpm, the noise gets louder, slower, its quieter. Any ideas?

The 560 IPTO were usually clutch type. The 400 were always planetary. I know the input speeds of both are different. You may be running a clutch type too fast. Don't know if the coupling where the IPTOs plug in will accept both types. If not, chances are the coupling or next shaft forward was changed. Used planetarys seem to be always available on eBay for less than $100. You can't repair one for less.

Anyway, tell us what type of IPTO you have on this 400.

I have IPTO on a SMTA & a 400. Rebuilt both during restoration, the SMTA whines about like you describe and the 400 is quiet. have tore smta down again and found nothing and have reajusted band and whine continues,it works great other wise.
After much research; consensous was some had this whine more then others,I know when I was a kid our 400 had a whine but not as bad as this smta.
Long story short the experts suggested that I use seasonal disconnect when not using.Have found no satisfactory answer. Tony

In addition to my previous post I meant to mention
I have a 1958 560 that has planitary IPTO the early ones looked like all 560 units accept the handle and linkage was like the 400.
The later handle and linkage indicate the disk type. I do not know when they changed over , mine is a very low three # serial.
Internal and handle wise my SMTA, 400,560 are the same,( I have a unit off SMTA that I used for parts),however face of pto housing on 560 looks like all other 560's
Hope I make sense If not my email is open. Tony
