42 Farmall H battery box

Hello all!

As this is my first post, I should introduce myself. My name is Jim and I am the owner of a 1942 H. I am looking to try and work it back into show quality eventually. It's not in horrible shape, nor is it in excellent shape. It was my father's tractor and he used it mainly for local shows. I know it brought him a lot of joy. He recently passed and I was asked if I would like it.

My first question is this...I know what the battery box is supposed to look like. I know it's supposed to slide and lock down on those "T" bolts that go through the bottom. (Mine has been replaced by an aftermarket marine battery box) As far as the cover goes, is it supposed to have rubber isolators on the underside of the cover? how many? are they mounted to plates and then the plates spot welded to the underside of the cover? I want to make sure I get the right parts to replace what is incorrect.

I look forward to spending a lot of time here.

Thank you for your help.

Welcome to the site. You will learn a ton here. I have. My 44 H has
4 rubber pads under the lid. If you look on Ebay they have
reproductions and usually you can see the pattern. As for how they
are attached it looks like just glued on but I do not know for sure. I
do know that mine has two shorter ones that go over the terminals
and 2 longer ones that touch the top of the battery. good luck and
post pictures if you have the time. We always love pictures.

Checkout this site-they have lots of parts.also,Stiener tractor parts and O.E.M. parts has a lot of "correct"parts for your old IH.

The original box lids had small metal u-shaped brackets holding the rubber blocks. The rubber blocks were cylindrical in shape with a small, about 1/8" thick, flange around the base. These were coaxed into the circular holes in the brackets which were welded to the underside of the lid. Don't have photograph to show but one also sees them advertised on e-bay.

What he said. I wouldn't stress about getting the rubber isolators on the battery box lid. Some of the newer batteries require the removal of the isolators anyhow. Only you would know if they weren't there anyway. It isn't like you will go to a show and pop your battery box lid so people know they are there. You would be wrong anyhow because it wouldn't have a 1950s battery. The batteries from back then were built way different with exposed metal (making the isolators more important)

I deal with Lawrence at Farm Country out of Oshkosh, WI. He has almost everything you need at VERY reasonable prices. He is at the Symco show this weekend if you are in that area. His shop number is (920)231-6623 and cell is (920)420-0255. I bought my H battery box with the correct bolts for right under $100. His wiring harnesses are AMAZING as well.

Edited for typo...

Excellent! I am not too far from Oshkosh. Thanks for the info guys. I am going to order a box this week and be on my way to getting it back "right". Then I will work on making it nicer quality.
