What do I have here

First of many questons on my new M. Why would someone put condensor on outside of distrubor. Will try to post some pictures. Thanks Bill

If it for radio noise suppression it is on the wrong lead, needs to be on the switch side, not distributor. If it replacing the ignition capacitor it doesn't make any difference electrically if it is on the inside or the out side.

My Renault Dalphine had the capacitor mounter on the outside of the distributor with a screw to the case and the the lead was a solid piece that went over the wire terminal. With no give on either end I had the lead break loose at the capacitor.

IIRC, those distributors use a skinny little cap, and, perhaps the PO didn't have one and the one he DID have wouldn't fit INSIDE the distributor.

(ESPECIALLY with that "hole-in-the-end" Ford mounting clip he had on hand!)

I agree with Bob. Probably the previous owner had an ignition problem (bad condenser), didn't have the correct replacement to fit inside the distributor, but DID have that clip/condenser assembly that he mounted on the outside.

It'll work fine the way it is. However in that exposed location rust on the condenser/clip is gonna cause problems sooner or later - especially if your M "lives outdoors".

The correct condensor for that distributor is readily available and always has been. If the previous owner couldn't find one, he really wasn't even trying.

I think that external condensor was put there for noise suppresion, but he mistakenly got it wrong.

Need to remove the distributor cap and see if there isn't another condensor underneath.

Now Randy, you presumably grew up in a farming environment and you know that farmers often do what is necessary to get the equipment up and running. They don't always fix it "right."

It probably wasn't a matter of not being able to find the correct condenser, but having THIS condenser on hand, and needing the tractor to run NOW.

The only reason you'd need noise suppression is for a radio. Is there any evidence of the tractor ever having had a radio installed?

And everybody in town knew which farmers did things that way. When he did bring something in for repair, most of the local mechanics tried to send him to somebody else. "I'm really backed up right now, maybe Bill down at the Sunoco station can help you out." It was usually worth it to make Bill (or whoever) mad at you.

Judging by the rust , it hasn't run in a while, so why not just put it where it should be.
