560 Gas PTO Question

Was baling hay, pulling a new to me JD336 baler and my PTO seems to be not working quite right. Not sure if the clutch is slipping or if I have a linkage problem on my 560 Farmall. If I pull the lever to engage PTO back all of the way and hold it there it works great. However, if I let it rest on the tab in the engaged position it starts the baler, then gives up the ghost as soon as any load is put on it. I noticed there looks like some slop in the linkage on the lever and managed to finish the field by jamming a flat head screwdriver in there and worked fine. Should I be looking at some reengineering of the linkage or clutch work?

There is not a lot of extra movement available for the lever if it is to work correctly. Most of the time the problem is the arm moving on the control shaft. Might have to replace the Woodruff key. You need to get rid of any extra free travel and the adjust the bands.

When adjusting the bands you can cheat a little by having the lever a little towards the brake side rather than in the middle. As long ans the drive band completely releases when the brake is applied you should be alright. It takes more pressure on the drive band to keep it from slipping that on the brake band to get it to stop.
